Making it happen.
The San Francisco State University Sustainable Materials Library is the only physical materials library in the country created to house—exclusively—actual physical samples of materials that are either biodegradable, created from recycled materials, or both. A groundbreaking project four years in the making, the library now features physical samples of over 100 such materials sourced from all over the world by more than 120 San Francisco State University School of Design and 6 California College of the Arts Graduate School of Design Student Co-Founders. And, in collaboration with creators and innovators world wide, it will continue to grow and evolve. The library is an invaluable resource, with the physical samples available to not only the SFSU Community, but accessible to the general public to see, touch, feel, and smell.
In addition, information about these resources—which include earth materials that have been with us from the beginnings of our planet, as well as new creations using ingeniously innovative substances and processes—and where to source them is also now available through this website. This resource was created in the hope that designers, architects, artists, and anyone in a creative industry will have new tools and resources to promote the making of future products that contribute to a circular economy.

It Started With Us
SFSU School of Design
The San Francisco State University's Sustainable Materials Library traces its origins to a 2022 course in exhibition design led by Professor JD Beltran at San Francisco State University's School of Design—wherein students were challenged to look beyond conventional processes and materials, and instead reimagine what thoughtful, responsible design could be. This quest became a catalyst, urging students to challenge assumptions and seek out materials and methods worthy of the world they hoped to build. This motivation to rethink the design process soon evolved into something far more meaningful: a living library dedicated to inspiring others to make material choices that honor both the environment and our shared humanity. Join us in celebrating ingenuity in sustainability—and explore what’s possible when design meets responsibility.

Our Story
We were challenged to rethink design processes at their onset—If I'm going to create something new, what can I make it out of that won't destroy the planet? This galvanized our dreaming up and then actually building a permanent resource dedicated to inspiring creators and designers to think differently, from the outset. By sourcing (from generous new materials manufacturers all over the world!) and then showcasing sustainable and recycled materials for other designers, we have created a space where students, designers, architects, artists, and the entire creative community can explore innovative materials, spark new ideas, and actually practice sustainable design.
We built the library ourselves, and outfitted it with recycled furniture, fixtures, and equipment. SFSU School of Design facilities coordinators Richard Ortiz and Justin Wong, and Professor JD Beltran designed an ingenious mobile wall system made from sustainable plywood and hempcrete bases. This wall display system now houses samples of materials sourced worldwide — each one telling a story about creativity, innovation, and care for the planet.

For us, this library is more than a collection of materials samples — it’s an exhilarating collaboration, and a reminder that design has the power to make a difference. We owe enormous gratitude to our generous collaborators and advisors: Gail Lee, former Director of the UCSF Office of Sustainability, SFSU Climate HQ, the San Francisco Department of the Environment, the BioDesign Challenge, SF Design Week, California College of the Arts, and the San Francisco School of Design, and especially former Chair of Design, Mari Hulick.
